Home Building: Challenging and Fun
Building custom homes presents many challenges. While there are similarities from job to job, each new client brings their individual tastes and preferences, as well as feelings, personalities and perceptions.
When the Schwemmers came to us they didn’t have a house plan, but they bought a pie-shaped lot from us that was at the end of a cul de sac and sloped down to a small lake. While the lot was gorgeous, it needed just the right plan to take advantage of all it had to offer. Like many clients, the Schwemmers brought us quite a few plans that they liked. No doubt, Suzanne probably got tired of hearing “sorry, that plan is just not a good fit for your lot.” After some late night house plan searching, Suzanne sent us the Cedar Court by Donald A. Gardner — it was perfect. Not only was the shape of the house what was needed on the lot, but the plan itself was awesome. The Cedar Court is an open, spacious design with lots of windows and exterior living areas that take full advantage of the view of the lake, and the design is elegant and well conceived.
One challenge down, one thousand remaining… Building a custom home is a detailed process involving many decisions by many different people. All of which must be coordinated in such a way that everything works as it was intended. While the architectural plans define the basic size and shape as well as many key details, there is still a great deal of “interpretation” that must occur as the building process unfolds. It is something like dancing with someone you just met — and they don’t really know how to dance! Some clients can be quite intimidated by the number of decisions and the level of detail that is required to get everything right. That is where the custom home builder’s real talents lie. We take plans from the architect, ideas and desires from the client, and we blend them with the real world experience that comes from building many homes using tried and proven resources that took years to develop. The result is a top quality project that is far less stressful and much more rewarding for the client. Even though the Schwemmers continued to live in Florida throughout the construction of their new home, we maintained a high level of communication and methodically led them through the building process to bring the Cedar Court to life. Their satisfaction with both the process and the product is the fruit of our efforts — it was a wonderful experience to build a great plan for great folks like Brian & Suzanne.
